About Woodsafe Exterior WFX™
Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ is the obvious choice of fireproof wood when you want "Mother Earth" to take care of the aging process on nature's own conditions, where wind, sunlight, precipitation and temperature create their expression on the wood panel. Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ is advantageously used in environments with high humidity such as bathhouse facilities, ice hockey arenas or in very humid environments such as mines, underground environments, and in exterior environments such as facade and roofing, irrespective of whether they are inland or coastal. Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ is available for wood such as cedar, larch, spruce, frake, oak or heat treated frake, spruce, thermowood and wood chips of e.g. cedar larch, pine.
Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ is ALL IN ONE fire protection and unique in all possible ways. Woodsafe Exterior WFX ™ is the only fire-proof impregnated wood product in Europe with waterproof and maintenance-free properties against fire, which is CE certified according to the European Commission Building Products Regulation CPR 305/2011, EN14915: 2013 and type approved by the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (SFS 2010: 900), PBL.
Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ treated wood has a characteristic light protective coating (K210/B-s1, d0, K110/B-s1, d0,), surface (B-s1, d0 and B-s2, d0), facade cladding (SP-Fire105) as well as persistent fire properties in exterior environment without any requirement for other surface treatments according to EN 16755 DRF EXT (ex-CEN/ts 15912, NT-Build 504).
The actual performance of the fireproof wood panel takes place in an industrial vacuum pressure impregnation process, and associated fixation of the fire retardant in the wood cell structure is achieved through a specially developed KDAT process. Woodsafe Exterior WFX™ fireproof wood is delivered from the factory with a 15-20% moisture content. All manufacturing is done according to our ISO 9001 manual and continuous production control agreement by RISE (formerly SP).
Questions and Answers
- GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL WOOD AND WOOD PRODUCTS
In our impregnation process, the wood and the wood product are fully woven and depending on the product, 10-30% by weight of fire protection agents are pressed into the cell structure and then dried back to a correct moisture ratio. The combination of moisture and drying means that an already finished planed, sawn or processed wood product can become crooked and lopsided compared to untreated wood. In the fire impregnation process, the wood is soaked with water mixed with fire impregnator and then dried. The impregnation process also means that dimensional changes due to wood and plywood can occur, even within the same quality assortment, which may result in the wood material dimension changing differently. Dimension change may deviate from planing tolerance and plywood tolerance, which is considered ok because the impregnation process occurs after planing and the production of plywood. It is the responsibility of the client/customer to take into account these conditions when ordering Woodsafe contract impregnation services.
- IS EXTERIOR WFX CLASSED AS ORGANIC FIRE PROTECTION?
-No, but you should know that no fire protection that is available is organic, such promises are misleading.
- IS EXTERIOR WFX TOXIC?
-No, the product is not classified as hazardous to health or the environment.
- CAN EXTERIOR WFX BE USED IN HOUSING?
-Yes, but it is mainly used in environments that have very high humidity.
- DOES EXTERIOR WFX CONTAIN SUBSTANCES RECORDED ON THE REACH LIST?
- CAN EXTERIOR WFX BE PAINTED?
-Yes, but only with our own special oil. Coating is not recommended due to staining problems due to the properties of fire protection in exterior environments without surface treatment.
- CAN I TREAT WITH SILICONE TYPES SUCH AS ORGANOWOOD, SIOOX, IRON VITRIOL?
-No. The treatment does not give the effect that the supplier markets it as having, for example greyscale or hydrophobic properties. The wood becomes naturally grey over time, at least when it is broken down by UV light, etc.
- IS EXTERIOR WFX TYPE APPROVED?
-Yes, since 2018. Included in the type approval certificate. Ref. no: 0263-08
- CAN I BUY THIS PRODUCT DIRECTLY?
-No, just through premium partners who will be more than happy to help you.
- IS EXTERIOR WFX CE CERTIFIED?
-Yes, since 2015. CE Certificate No: CPR 0402-0260-15
- DOES EXTERIOR WFX HAVE DURABLE FIRE RESISTANT PROPERTIES?
-Yes, it's certified EN16755 DRF EXT and ASTM D2898 without any requirement for surface treatment and maintenance.
- DOES EXTERIOR WFX CONTAIN HYGROSCOPIC SUBSTANCES SUCH AS AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE?
- WHY IS WOODSAFE EXTERIOR WFX MAINTENANCE FREE?
-WFX is polymerised fire protection that cannot be dissolved by water or broken down by UV light. Maintenance may, however, be required on the wood panel depending on the choice of wood because different woods have different levels of resistance in the exterior environment, for example, the difference between spruce and cedar wood.
- SOME OPERATORS CONSIDER THAT THEIR PRODUCT IS MAINTENANCE-FREE AFTER THE THROUGH-IMPREGNATION, IS THAT SO?
-No, impregnation in relation to fire protection properties are two completely different things. Claims that fireproofing agents containing ammonium have properties that are equivalent to Woodsafe Exterior WFX are completely unfounded. In addition, many woods cannot be impregnated as claimed, woods like spruce, larch, cedar, are a few examples of wood that cannot be impregnated with fire protection impregnation.
- CAN FIRE PROTECTION MADE WITH IRON(III) PHOSPHATE, AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE, DI-AMMONIUM MFL BE COMPATIBLE WITH WFX MAINTENANCE?
-No, this is impossible. There are completely different types of compound chemicals where function and properties cannot be replaced or equal to Woodsafe Exterior WFX™.
